AED 50.00

Price before tax
AED 1,000.00
Price including tax
AED 1,050.00

Adding 5% tax to AED 1,000.00 gives AED 1,050.00, of which AED 50.00 is tax.

How it's worked out

  1. TaxAED 1,000.00 × 5%AED 50.00
  2. Price including taxAED 1,000.00 + AED 50.00AED 1,050.00
  • Taking tax out of a price is not the same as subtracting the rate: 15% tax inside 115 is 15, which is 13% of 115.
  • Standard rate. Some goods and services use a different or zero rate; check the rate for your item.

Adding and removing tax

Price with tax = price × (1 + rate)
Price before tax = price with tax ÷ (1 + rate)

Worked example

A Dubai invoice of AED 1,000 before VAT becomes 1,000 × 1.05 = AED 1,050. A Riyadh receipt of SAR 115 including VAT was 115 ÷ 1.15 = SAR 100 before tax, with SAR 15 of VAT.

Questions people ask

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. With 15% VAT, a price of 115 is 115 ÷ 1.15 = 100 before tax, so the VAT is 15. Simply taking 15% off 115 would be wrong.

What is the VAT rate in the UAE and Saudi Arabia?

The UAE's standard VAT rate is 5% and Saudi Arabia's is 15%. Some items, such as certain healthcare and education, are zero-rated or exempt.

What are India's GST rates?

Since GST 2.0 took effect on 22 September 2025, most goods and services are taxed at 5% or 18%, with 40% on luxury and sin goods and some items at 0%.
