How salary tax works in Pakistan
Salaried income is taxed in bands. Each band has a fixed amount, covering all the income below it, plus a percentage of the amount above where the band starts. Only the part of your salary inside a band is taxed at that band's rate.
Annual tax = band's fixed amount + band rate × (annual salary − band start)
Worked example: Rs 250,000 a month
That is Rs 3,000,000 a year, inside the Rs 2,200,001 to Rs 3,200,000 band. Tax is Rs 116,000 + 20% × (3,000,000 − 2,200,000) = Rs 276,000 a year, or Rs 23,000 a month, leaving Rs 227,000 take-home. The effective rate is 9.2%.
What this calculator leaves out
It covers taxable salary for a filer. Tax-exempt allowances, tax credits (for example on pension contributions or donations) and other income such as rent or business profit change the final figure. Your employer's payroll deduction may also differ slightly month to month.
Questions people ask
How much salary is tax-free in Pakistan in 2026-27?
Annual taxable salary up to Rs 600,000 (Rs 50,000 a month) is tax-free for salaried people.
How much tax is due on Rs 150,000 a month?
Rs 150,000 a month is Rs 1.8 million a year. That falls in the 11% band: Rs 6,000 plus 11% of the Rs 600,000 above Rs 1.2 million, which is Rs 72,000 a year or Rs 6,000 a month.
What changed in the 2026-27 budget for salaried people?
The bands above Rs 2.2 million were lowered: 20% (from 23%), 25% (from 30%), and new 29% and 32% bands, so the 35% top rate now starts above Rs 7 million instead of Rs 4.1 million. The 9% surcharge on salaries above Rs 10 million was withdrawn.
What is the difference between effective and marginal tax rate?
Your effective rate is your total tax divided by your salary. Your marginal rate is the rate on your next rupee of income. Because the bands are progressive, the effective rate is always lower.
