30% off Rs 4,500.00 brings it to Rs 3,150.00, saving Rs 1,350.00.
How it's worked out
- After the first discount
Rs 4,500.00 × (1 − 30%)Rs 3,150.00 - Saved
Rs 4,500.00 − Rs 3,150.00Rs 1,350.00
How discounts work
Sale price = price × (1 − first discount) × (1 − extra discount)
Worked example
A Rs 1,000 item at 30% off costs Rs 700. A further 10% off takes Rs 70 more, so you pay Rs 630: a total discount of 37%, not 40%.
Questions people ask
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by (1 − discount). 30% off 4,500 is 4,500 × 0.70 = 3,150.
Is 30% off then 10% off the same as 40% off?
No. The second discount is taken from the already reduced price, so it adds up to 37%: 0.70 × 0.90 = 0.63 of the original price.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). A sale price of 3,150 at 30% off was 3,150 ÷ 0.70 = 4,500.
