  • Uses one steady average rate; real inflation changes year to year and differs by item.

The formula

Future cost = cost today × (1 + inflation)^years · Buying power = amount ÷ (1 + inflation)^years

Worked example

At 8% inflation a year, Rs 100,000 of shopping today will cost about Rs 199,900 in 9 years. Kept as cash, Rs 100,000 will then buy only what about Rs 50,000 buys today.

Questions people ask

How does inflation affect my money?

As prices rise, the same amount of cash buys less. At 8% a year, prices roughly double in 9 years, so cash keeps only about half its buying power.

What rate should I use?

Use the average inflation you expect. Pakistan's has swung widely in recent years, while the Gulf's has usually been low; a long-run average is more useful than a single year.

Is this the same as interest?

No. It calculates no interest or returns, only how rising prices change what money can buy.
