How dates are added

Days and weeks are counted on the calendar one by one. Months and years move the date to the same day of the target month, or to its last day if that month is shorter.

Worked example

A 90-day visa starting on 25 October 2026 runs out on Saturday, 23 January 2027. A 3-month notice period from 31 March ends on 30 June.

How are months added to the 31st?

When the target month is shorter, the date lands on its last day: 31 January plus one month is 28 February (29 in a leap year).

Is the start date counted?

No. Adding 1 day to Monday gives Tuesday.
