How it's worked out

  1. What you've already earned72% × 60%43.2%
  2. What the final must add75% − 43.2%31.8%
  3. Score needed on the final31.8% ÷ 40%79.5%

The formula

Final needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

Worked example

With 72% so far and a final worth 40%, you've earned 72 × 0.6 = 43.2 points. To finish on 75% you need 31.8 more, so 31.8 ÷ 0.4 = 79.5% on the final.

Questions people ask

How do I work out what I need on the final?

Take your target, subtract what you've already earned (current grade × the share of the course before the final), and divide by the final's weight.

What if the answer is over 100%?

Then the target can't be reached even with full marks; the calculator shows the best overall grade still possible.

What does the final's weight mean?

The share of your overall grade the final is worth, for example 40%.
