Average Calculator
Paste or type any list of numbers to get the mean, median, mode, range and standard deviation, with the working for each.
Separate them with commas, spaces or new lines. You can paste a column from a spreadsheet.

The average of these 7 numbers is 19.5714. Half are at or below the median of 18, and they run from 12 to 35.
How it's worked out
- Add them up
12 + 15 + 15 + 18 + 20 + 22 + 35137 - Mean: divide by how many
137 ÷ 719.571429 - Median: sort and take the middle
12, 15, 15, 18, 20, 22, 3518 - Mode: the most frequent15
The measures
- Mean: the sum divided by how many numbers there are.
- Median: the middle number when sorted, or the average of the two middle numbers.
- Mode: the number that appears most often.
Worked example
For 12, 15, 15, 18, 20, 22 and 35: the sum is 137, so the mean is 137 ÷ 7 = 19.57. The median is 18 and the mode is 15. The one large value, 35, pulls the mean above the median.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean adds everything and divides by how many there are; the median is the middle value once they're sorted. A few very large values pull the mean up but barely move the median.
What if no number repeats?
Then there is no mode. If several numbers share the highest count, each of them is a mode.
Which standard deviation is this?
The sample standard deviation, dividing by n − 1, which is the usual choice when your numbers are a sample of something larger.
