Robinson

How it's worked out

  3. Healthy BMI range (18.5 to 24.9)18.5 × 1.75² to 24.9 × 1.75²56.7 to 76.3 kg
  • These formulas were made for dosing medicines, not as weight targets. The BMI range is the more practical guide; frame and muscle matter too.

The Devine formula

Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg × inches over 5 ft · Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg × inches over 5 ft

Worked example

A man 175 cm tall is 8.9 inches over 5 feet, so Devine gives 50 + 2.3 × 8.9 = 70.5 kg. A healthy BMI at that height is 56.7 to 76.3 kg.

Questions people ask

What is my ideal weight?

There's no single number. The classic formulas give a narrow figure; a healthy BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 gives a wider, more useful range.

Which formula is best?

Devine's is the most used, mainly for medicine doses. For everyday goals, the healthy BMI range is a better guide.

Does muscle change my ideal weight?

Yes. Muscular people can be healthy above these figures; body fat percentage is a better check.
